The Office of Public Information Requests (OPIR) was developed to create a simpler and more consistent experience for citizens, allowing agencies to spend less time and resources processing information requests.
You can submit a public information request to OPIR-supported agencies via the OPIR Central Intake Center's Make a Public Information Request form or via email to publicrecords@mt.gov.
Before submitting a request, we encourage you to read the Frequently Asked Questions and Creating a Public Information Request Checklist to find out which agencies OPIR processes public information requests for and how the process works.
The Montana Constitution (Art. II, sec. 9) affords the public the right to examine documents of all public bodies or agencies of the State of Montana. These requests are also known as “right to know,” “public information,” “public record,” “freedom of information act,” or “FOIA” requests.
